While most guys feel comfortable integrating condoms into anal sex, they shy away from condoms when it comes to giving head. This is not a question of missing information; most of us know that oral sex is safer with a condom, but the reality is that most guys prefer to suck raw. It’s a personal decision and it’s certainly important to stress that guys who do wish to use condoms for oral sex need to be comfortable with their decision. Some choose to use condoms only for particular oral sex experiences. And remember, flavoured condoms are always an option.
Condom use does reduce the risk of infection during oral sex. There are, however, other harm-reduction strategies. First of all, keeping a cum-free mouth can help, since HIV is carried by cum and pre-cum. If there are any cuts or sores in the mouth (including herpes sores), its best to refrain from giving blow jobs, unless you’re willing to use a condom. Avoid brushing or flossing your teeth before going down on someone as this can “open” your gums. (If it’s fresh breath you’re worried about, chew some gum, or use mouthwash.) Likewise, don’t go down on guys just after seeing the dentist. Even eating popcorn beforehand can be a bad idea. Sore throats can also be an entry point to the blood stream.
